El Palmar: the surf classic
Around an hour from Tarifa, El Palmar is one of the best-known surfing destinations in southern Spain.
Its long, open beach offers numerous peaks, making it suitable for different levels depending on the conditions. On smaller days it is a wonderful place to learn; when a good Atlantic swell arrives, El Palmar reveals a completely different character.
There is also something special about the atmosphere: surfboards, barefoot mornings, little cafés and chiringuitos, and that relaxed rhythm of the Cádiz coast. It is easy to spend the whole day.
Playa de la Hierba Buena: wild Atlantic beauty
Near Barbate, surrounded by the spectacular landscape of La Breña Natural Park, Playa de la Hierba Buena offers a very different experience.
Wilder, quieter and wonderfully natural, it is known among surfers for the quality of its right-hand wave when the conditions are right.

On this coastline, flexibility is everything
Levante, Poniente, swell direction and tides can completely transform the sea from one day to the next. When a strong Levante makes one area unsuitable, experienced local surfers know where to look for more protected conditions — sometimes heading east towards the Mediterranean side of the coast, sometimes west towards the more exposed Atlantic beaches.
That local knowledge makes the difference between simply going to the beach and enjoying a truly memorable surf session.
